In
Heuvelland, there is a lot to discover in nature. Nature guide Renata Bruggeman
from Loker receives groups in her herb garden in Kalissestraat or guides you
through the most beautiful woods and nature reserves Heuvelland and surroundings
have to offer. And there are many: the Eeuwenhout in Dranouter, the Sulferberg
reserve and the Broekelzen in Westouter, Provincial Domain De Kemmelberg in
Kemmel or the Hellegat woods that cover the top and the northern and western
slopes of the Rodeberg. The Eeuwenhout can be found on the western slope of the
Douve valley and has a steep slope facing southeast. The abrupt succession of
clay and sandy soil results in a very diverse vegetation. You will find plants
that do well in dry grounds as well as plants that do well in moister land and
in marshes. The Eeuwenhout is not freely accessible but an open country road
(Lampernissestraat) does take you right across it. The Broekelzen consists of
mixed spring woods with adjacent pastures and fields. The Sulferberg reserve is
a pasture with a small spring wood and the Brandersbos. It stretches out over
Westouter and Reningelst. You’ll see the nicest spots in the reserve from the
Tweebergenpad.
